Universal’s “Furious 7” is set to not only break April records, it looks certain to crack the top ten opening weekends of all time.
The latest instalment in the “Fast and Furious” franchise pulled in an estimated $67.3 million on its opening Friday (including Thursday previews), the tenth best opening day of all time. On Friday alone the film averaged a whopping $16,000 per screen.
That’s a big jump up from the $38.7 million opening Friday of the previous instalment “Fast and Furious 6,” and is more in line with “Iron Man 3” ($68M) and “The Dark Knight” ($67.1M) which went on to $174 million and $158 million opening weekends respectively.
Even if front loaded, the film is certain to gross at least $140 million over the Easter holiday weekend, and reports are coming in of some cinemas staying open 24 hours to meet the demand.
Reviews are pretty good too, the new one garnering a 67/100 on Metacritic which is equal best of the series with “Fast Five”. On Rotten Tomatoes, “Furious 7” (82{8cfe84d18b661c0e88071c953771f19816be99714b4311fec7858d5ca27a2795} & 6.6/10) has pulled just ahead of “Fast Five” (78{8cfe84d18b661c0e88071c953771f19816be99714b4311fec7858d5ca27a2795} & 6.4/10) for best in the series.
