Thirty-five million dollars. That’s all that separates the worldwide grosses of the first Kick-Ass, and its sequel, Kick-Ass 2. That doesn’t sound like a lot, but when neither gross is over $100 million, and each cost about $30 million to make, it’s a big percentage. Because of that, plans to continue the franchise either with a Kick-Ass 3 or Hit Girl spin-off have pretty much stalled. Fans still talk about the ideas, though, and so do the filmmakers.
Case in point: Kick-Ass director and sequel producer Matthew Vaughn. In a new interview, he suggests he’d like to do a Kick-Ass prequel, centering on Hit Girl and Big Daddy, as a palate cleanser leading to Kick-Ass 3. Sounds awesome right? Well series co-creator Mark Millar is less optimistic about those movies actually happening. Check out the Vaughn and Miller Kick-Ass prequel and sequel quotes below.
First up, here’s Vaughn talking to Yahoo UK.
Can’t watch? Here’s his quote:
We would like to dip our toe back into it… We’re working on an idea for a prequel of how did Hit Girl and Big Daddy become Hit Girl and Big Daddy. It’s quite a fun idea we’ve come up with. If we make that, hopefully that will be the sorbet for the people that didn’t like ‘Kick-Ass 2’ and then we can go off and make ‘Kick-Ass 3.’ I think we’ve got to do this prequel to regain the love that we had with ‘Kick-Ass.’
Which sounds phenomenal. So we asked Millar about it. Here’s what he told /Film:
There’s really nothing happening here in any official way. Matthew is talking about an idea we had for Hit-Girl but it’s just been a few informal chats and we haven’t discussed Kick-Ass 3 at all. We’re getting Superior together at the moment and Matthew is putting some Kingsman sequel ideas together but Hit-Girl and Kick-Ass are not on our radar I’m afraid.
When you have Mark Millar, who is so famous for talking up his projects, talking one down, you have to take it seriously.
I think Vaughn is right that there needs to be some kind of bridge before Kick-Ass 3 is ever made, and a perfect bridge would be Hit-Girl. But Chloe Grace Moretz is quickly growing up, ditto Aaron Taylor Johnson, and if the films are nothing more than “informal chats” at the moment, I wouldn’t hold my breath. You can, however, always read the comics which cover all of this and are incredibly exciting and rewarding. Reading them though, you do kind of wish you could see the stories unfold on the big screen. Could it happen at some point? Yes. But will it happen soon? Not likely.
What are your thoughts on the Kick-Ass prequel and sequel rumors?
