Release Date, Story, & Everything We Know About The Boys Spinoff

Summary

  • Gen V, the spinoff of The Boys, is set to premiere on September 29, 2023, with the first three episodes releasing on that day.
  • The spinoff will feature returning characters from The Boys, such as A-Train and Soldier Boy, as well as introduce new characters with superpowers.

Gen V is the second spinoff of Amazon’s hit superhero series The Boys. In 2020, it was announced that Amazon was fast-tracking the development of Gen V, undoubtedly hoping to capitalize on the success of The Boys. A subversive take on the superhero genre, The Boys was created by Eric Kripke, and during the third season’s debut, The Boys became the third most-watched streaming series in the U.S. (via Nerdstash). Despite the divisive ending of The Boys season 3, to say that Gen V has big shoes to fill would be an understatement.

The Boys is based on the comics of the same name by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson. Volume 4 of the comics, “We Gotta Go Now,” satirizes the X-Men by focusing on college-aged Supes known as the G-Men — who even live in the G-Mansion, similar to Charles Xavier’s X-Mansion. The Gen V spinoff will be pulling from this storyline of The Boys‘ comics, bringing characters like Marie Moreau, Emma Shaw, and Golden Boy to the screen. Despite the younger characters, however, Gen V isn’t targeting younger audiences. All recent Gen V updates point to the spinoff being filled with the same carnage and razor-sharp social satire as The Boys.

Gen V: The Boys Spin-off Cast

The Gen V Boys spinoff series will see the appearance of Reggie Franklin, better known as A-Train (Jessie T. Usher), Soldier Boy (Jason Ackles), Ashley Barrett (Colby Minifie), and Adam Bourke (P.J. Byrne). Also appearing briefly in the trailer is a puppet version of The Deep (Chase Crawford). His voice isn’t audible, but it’s possible that Crawford will be appearing either in person or just voicing the puppet. The recent trailer revealed that these returning characters from The Boys will have a part to play in the development of the young Supes of Gen V and could be a way to bridge the two series.

Gen V promises to have a much younger cast than The Boys overall. So far, new cast members with named characters include Jaz Sinclair as Marie Moreau, Lizze Broadway as Emma Meyer, Patrick Schwarzenegger as Golden Boy, Maddie Phillips as Cate, Sean Patrick Thomas as Polarity, and Marco Pigossi as Doctor Edison Cardosa. Newcomers whose characters are yet to be revealed in recent Gen V updates include Jason Ritter, Alexander Calvert, Derek Luh, London Thor, Chance Perdomo, Asa Germann, Shelley Conn, and Clancy Brown.

Gen V: The Boys Spin-off Story Details

Gen V

No significant story details have been released, but The BoysGen V spinoff will connect the series and follow the lives of the college-aged Supes as they compete against each other in Hunger Games-like tests. The shots from the trailer of young adults being dragged off by soldiers or shoveling piles of gore may be the results of some of these games. The story’s central location is revealed in the trailer. A voiceover welcomes students (and viewers) to the Godolkin University School of Crimefighting, an institution run by Vought Industries. The voice refers to it as a “safe space,” but the carnage that follows paints it as anything but.

Gen V: The Boys Spin-off Trailer

25 Gen V

As the wait for The Boys spinoff updates continues, the first Gen V trailer has hints and Easter eggs to satisfy fans. As previously suggested by the set photos released from the show, Gen V appears to take place alongside the events of The Boys, with the characters A-Train, Ashley, and Adam popping up for a few seconds in the quick-cutting trailer. Many of the spinoff show’s new characters also make an appearance throughout the trailer, and while there are barely any lines heard, let alone plot points revealed, the amount of blood each character is covered in signals that Gen V is going to be as messy as its predecessor.

There is no shortage of bodies and dismembered limbs in the bloody Gen V trailer, so even though the characters are mainly teenagers, they seem willing and able to kill as much as their adult counterparts do. A few powers are shown on display including someone with telekinesis who breaks down a door and cracks a table in half without touching them, a girl who whips out some sort of red tentacle that swiftly engulfs another person’s head, someone who shoots a blast of energy flinging their assailant away, and a shrinking Supe trapped under a plastic cup. Vought Industries has clearly been busy working up new powers.

How Eric Kripke Is Adapting The Boys Comics For Gen V

Ashley Gen V The Boys

Gen V will be set on a college campus attended exclusively by Supes, the G-Men’s Godolkin University School of Crimefighting, which is owned and operated by Vought International. Though the setting is different, Gen V will add more to the roster of Marvel and DC characters parodied by The Boys. In a 2020 interview with The Wrap, Kripke said the show will be loosely based on the G-Men, a satirical version of the X-Men from The Boys comics: a super team assembled by pedophile John Godolkin. “Part of the G-Men is there’s sort of an educational, college experience. And we just used that as a jumping-off point, kind of similar to The Boys, where we sort of take an initial notion, and then we are going to run with it in our own weird direction,” Kripke said.

The series looks to be part Hunger Games and part sex comedy with an infusion of the same satire that has made The Boys so popular. Kripke hopes that the series will be “one of the most realistic college shows anyone’s made.” The spin-off will exist in the same universe as its predecessor with no current crossover plans, although recent Gen V updates have confirmed there will be at least few notable connections. While The Boys season 3 explored the effects of Temp V or V24, which gives people only 24 hours of superpowers, Gen V will reveal more about how Vought turns teens into permanent Supes through Compound V.
