The hiring of Simon Kinberg to pen the next trilogy of “Star Wars” films has fueled a bunch of speculation.
Last week the talk turned toward what era of “Star Wars” the new films would cover, with rumors swirling that it would be set after “The Rise of Skywalker” and would feature Daisy Ridley’s Rey in a key supporting role.
That would put it in direct contention with the Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy directed “New Jedi Order” film in the works that lost its writer Steven Knight some time back, a project that seems to be stuck in development at present.
THR has posted a new report which indicates Ridley’s scavenger-turned-Jedi character is “key to the franchise’s next turn” and insiders tell them “there definitely is internal deliberation within Lucasfilm as to what do with the heir to Skywalker next.”
Their sources indicate Rey is set to play a role in several movies that are being developed, but which ones are unclear. They go on to say: “She is the most valuable cinematic asset, in some ways maybe the only one, Star Wars has right now.”
Even so, numerous “Star Wars” movies are reportedly being developed that overlap characters or timelines and are not related. Another says: “Star Wars is a nostalgia-based enterprise and they are running out of ways to create nostalgia.”
